Storming in the sunset

Docked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, it was the first time I had seen it rain off in the distance while staying dry. Seeing this made me think more and more than rain is magic, How does it just spill out like that over there and not on top of me? And how is the sun still out if its raining?
